About Pieter Fourie

Remote Technical Consultant · Mechanical Engineer · Linux Infrastructure Specialist

A Life of Hands-On Engineering and Practical Innovation

I’m Pieter Fourie, a 63-year-old South African mechanical engineer based in Heidelberg, Western Cape, with a career built on solving real problems in demanding environments — from an Antarctic supply vessel to steel mills, fruit packhouses to off-grid rural properties.

My academic foundation covers mechanical engineering with industrial electrotechnology and naval architecture subjects, followed by two years of national service as a platoon sergeant. That combination of formal engineering discipline and military-grade practical accountability has shaped how I approach every project.

Career History

  • 4 years as a junior engineer aboard an Antarctic research vessel, responsible for off-grid power and utility systems
  • 13 years as mechanical maintenance superintendent across two fruit packing and cold storage facilities, retrenched
  • 2 years owning and operating a pizza and pasta franchise, sold as market conditions changed
  • 2 years at an international manufacturer of specialised fruit packing and storage boxes, retrenched
  • 5 years as mechanical superintendent at a steel casting plant and rebar rolling mill, retrenched
  • Ran a parallel online electronics retail sideline during full-time employment, discontinued due to competition
  • 1 year as mechanical superintendent at a national bakery, left
  • 1 year as site superintendent for a boiler manufacturer installing systems at breweries — designed installation piping and valve configurations, then managed on-site installation teams, left
  • NEMTEK electric fencing course, 2016 — one week
  • Ongoing duck and chicken hatching sideline, selling chicks and ducklings, with diminishing sales since 2024

Retrenchments were industry-driven, not performance-driven. Each one pushed me toward greater independence and self-reliance.

Current Work

I run an independent technical consulting and Linux infrastructure practice out of Heidelberg, Western Cape — self-managing a Proxmox host with an ISPConfig VM on Debian/NGINX, hosting around 33 domains across a network of niche sites for rural, agricultural, and small business clients in South Africa and the USA. Full daily backups run from the Proxmox host to a separate data server.

My workshop runs a CNC 3018 (extendable to 300×400mm or 300×600mm), a Creality Falcon Pro 10W diode laser (380×850mm bed), a 3D printer (300×300×350mm), and an 870mm vinyl cutter — giving me direct production capability for drone repair, RC aircraft short kits, agricultural UAV development, prototyping, and small-batch fabrication.

Everything runs open-source and self-hosted: no shared hosting, no control panels I don’t own, no dependency on third-party platforms.

What I Offer

  • Mechanical and electrical maintenance consulting
  • Industrial troubleshooting and fault diagnosis
  • Off-grid system design — solar, water, power, and electric fencing
  • CNC routing, laser cutting, and small-batch fabrication
  • Drone and RC system repairs, agricultural UAV builds
  • Linux server administration, ISPConfig/Proxmox management, and WordPress hosting
  • Custom WordPress plugin development and site builds
  • Local SEO for small and rural businesses
  • Hands-on project supervision for rural and remote sites, including live-in/off-grid arrangements

My clients are typically small business owners, farmers, and rural property operators who need practical help from someone who understands both the engineering and the business side.
