About Pieter Fourie

Remote Technical Consultant · Mechanical Engineer · Linux Infrastructure Specialist

A Life of Hands-On Engineering and Practical Innovation

I am Pieter Fourie, a 63-year-old South African mechanical engineer with a career built on solving real problems in demanding environments — from Antarctic supply ships to steel mills, fruit packhouses to off-grid rural properties.

My academic foundation covers mechanical engineering with industrial electrotechnology and naval architecture subjects, followed by two years of national service as a platoon sergeant. That combination of formal engineering discipline and military-grade practical accountability has shaped how I approach every project.

Career History

I have worked across a wide range of industries over four decades, always in hands-on engineering and maintenance roles:

  • 4 years as a junior engineer aboard an Antarctic supply ship
  • 13 years as mechanical maintenance superintendent across two fruit packhouses and cold storage facilities, retrenched
  • 2 years owning and operating a pizza and pasta fast-food franchise, sold as market conditions changed
  • 2 years at an international manufacturer of specialised fruit packing and storage boxes, retrenched
  • 5 years as mechanical superintendent at a steel casting plant and rebar rolling mill, retrenched
  • Ran a parallel online electronics retail business during full-time employment, discontinued due to market saturation
  • 1 year as mechanical superintendent at a national bakery, left
  • 1 year as site superintendent for a boiler manufacturer installing systems at beer breweries, left
  • Ran a duck and chicken hatching operation selling chicks and ducklings, ongoing as a small hobby with diminishing sales since 2024

Retrenchments were industry-driven, not performance-driven. Each one pushed me toward greater independence and self-reliance.

Current Work

I now operate as an independent technical consultant and Linux infrastructure specialist, running my own Debian Linux servers with NGINX and ISPConfig, hosting a network of niche websites targeting rural, agricultural, and small business clients across South Africa.

My workshop is equipped with CNC routers, laser cutters, and 3D printers, giving me direct production capability for prototyping, small-batch manufacturing, and custom fabrication work.

I build and manage all my own infrastructure — no shared hosting, no control panels I do not own, no dependency on third-party platforms. Everything runs open-source, self-hosted, and fully under my control.

What I Offer

  • Mechanical and electrical maintenance consulting
  • Industrial troubleshooting and fault diagnosis
  • Off-grid system design including solar, water, and power infrastructure
  • CNC routing, laser cutting, and small-batch fabrication
  • Drone and RC system repairs
  • Linux server administration and WordPress hosting management
  • Website build and local SEO for small and rural businesses
  • Hands-on project supervision for rural and remote sites

My clients are typically small business owners, farmers, and rural property operators who need practical help from someone who understands both the engineering and the business side.

My Network of Sites

I operate a growing network of niche websites across technology, fabrication, agriculture, and community topics:
